Update : Thanks for all the suggestions! I took the idea of going local. The gal at the store suggested this, made in Fort Worth:
maybe I’ll grab one for myself
I need help you guys. I’m going to our school’s dad’s club party tomorrow night. I’m obviously in the club, and we’re contributing stuff for gift baskets to raffle. One of the things we want is good liquor. I’m more experienced with wine selections, but I’m considering a liquor contribution. Have a pretty well stocked liquor store on the way home. What’s an affordable spirit that you would recommend for a reasonable price that you’d buy a raffle ticket for if it were part of a gift basket?

Solid. I like the bourbon and scotch choices. Thanks.

I’ll mix up a batch for the next frat party I go to. This is a church school club party, and I don’t want to be ostracized. :)

Also, I am one of those that actually likes Tylenol and cough syrup. When they came up with the Flaming Homer, I wanted to try it.

For National brands, I personally like Russian Standard or Beluga for vodka but Kettle has more name recognition. Whiskey I would go makers (maybe even makers 46) or Jameson. 4 roses single barrel is also tasty if you can find it on-sale.
I would probably go with a local brand of liquor if you have any. I would personally be more willing to buy a raffle ticket if it included booze that looks good but I haven’t tried.

I like the idea of local. It feels like you’re getting a treat to try something new you wouldn’t ordinarily. Good idea.

Anything in the $30+ a bottle range will draw. Johnnie Walker has a Game of Thrones White Walker edition that’s a neat bottle. When you freeze the bottle it shows the words winter is coming on the side. They have a Jane Walker special edition too (I think it’s Johnnie Black but the walking man logo is a woman) that’s an interesting choice as well. Both are limited editions so worthy of collecting regardless of the drink. I didn’t like the White Walker edition so much, but the bottle is cool and I kept it. Higher end Tequila’s have the most interesting and unique bottles that are something that can also draw attention. T hose skull vodka bottles from Dan Akroyds distillery are neat visuals too .

I’ll let the booze experts handle the specifics but one suggestion I might make is that if there is a craft distillery in your area you might pick up something from them.

These are great ideas, and you have my price range about right.

There are, but I’m not sure where they are. If I figure it out before the party tomorrow, that’s a great option.

Your liquor store might carry some of their stuff. I know ours carried local stuff even before they did away with the state-run stores.

Probably do. This is a well stocked store.

Jameson - t he c ask mates label if you feel to spend a little bit more.

I’d make some homemade eggnog or Bailey's and put it in a pretty bottle like so:

I was given a bottle of white walker a few weeks ago. I forgot I had it. I’m not huge on scotch but I’ll have to throw it in the freezer!

Woodford is a good option too!

Go slightly over and get a bottle of Veuve. Perfect for the upcoming new year.

If champagne is no, go for Bulleit Rye bourbon. Or Johnny Walker Blue

I was going to suggest this: http://www.bumwine.com

Maybe I’ll do that for myself. Yum.

All good choices.

I still get by with the not so fancy stuff. Unless your well stocked liquor store carries Bourbon County beer from Goose Island. Those are $10-25.
![]() 12/14/2018 at 18:20 |

I don’t buy fancy stuff for myself either, but I’m going to try to get something interesting enough to raffle. A bottle of Seagrams 7 probably wouldn’t draw the highest bids.

Flor De Cana rum is one of my favorites. It’s from Nicaragua and generally available in a variety of price ranges based on age. I tend to drink the $18 4 year old at home. The $30 20 year old is super smooth. There’s a 4 year old white rum that I’d avoid however. Tastes a bit like gin from what I remember.

It so happens that
I just emptied
a bottle of Bulleit Rye last week
, and I just
opened a new bottle
of Knob Hi
ll 100 proof last night
, and while they’re both quite
nice
,
I have to say that I prefer my old standby George Dickel #12 to either of them.
It’s just my favorite.
If I were going to a party and I wanted to bring a bottle I’d go for GD#12.

Where the Hell do you get Balvenie for $40? I never see any of their offerings for less than $55 or so.

Good thing the bottle is cool as the whiskey itself wasn’t even as good as Johnnie red label IMO. Johnnie Black is my go to, or my “Budweiser” (dunno that saying is even relevant these days) . When I’m less concerned about sipping for taste I drink red label.
![]() 12/14/2018 at 18:44 |

Totally makes sense. My roommate is employed by AB so Budweiser is still relevant in my house haha
I usually buy a handle of whatever is onsale at Costco for my daily drinker (not that I drink every day). They had Bulleit last month but they usually alternate that with Makers. Sometimes I’ll even grab the Kirkland version of Crown. With a few cubes or after a cask strength, pretty much anything is fine.

I’ve found that Evan Williams Single Barrel is the best bourbon bang for your buck. $22 here in Wisconsin. I like Buffalo Trace as well.
I step up to Booker’s if I want a better si pping whiskey.
Jameson makes a whisky that’s aged in Sherry barrels. Good stuff.
The only Scotch recommendation I have is not available on the States...

Templeton Rye

Basil Hayden, 4 Roses, Mitchers, Bulleit, Tincup, Stranahan’s, Wyoming Whiskey, A.D. Laws bourbon... or if you want more Scottish, McCallan is nice and not too peaty, or anything with Glen**** in the name... or if you want vodka, Grey Goose, Ciroc, Belvedere, Russian Standard. In tequila world, can’t go wrong with Don Julio, and Dobel came highly recommended . Local craft beer is always a good idea - especially in a growler. Or one of each and try some for yourself :D

When you’re right you’re right, 50$ on base not 40.

I made some homemade nog a couple years ago, by the gallon, with a slight surplus of kick. Very smooth, I used Breckenridge rye, which is from a logical point of view too expensive for that, but... eh.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 11:55 |
|
The traditional additive is rum, but I think bourbon, rye, or Southern Comfort tastes better.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 13:06 |

A subtle vanilla and nutmeg flavor is waaaay too easy to overpower with even a minimally spiced rum. But: also easy to mess up with other strongly flavored liquor too.
The Breckenridge mostly just intensified the flavor and made it warming, without any kind of distilled liquor bite. After about the second small cup, you’d suddenly realize that it hit like a hammer. :D

That sounds like my kind of medicine.
